AB 1548: The California Nonprofit Security Grant Program - SUPPORT
Urgent Action Alert: The California Nonprofit Security Grant Program needs your help. Please take action to encourage California State Senate leadership to support Assembly Bill 1548 (Gabriel): The California Nonprofit Security Grant Program.
The bill is currently stalled in the Senate Appropriations Suspense file. If it does not get passed out of the Suspense File, then the bill will not move forward to the Governor's desk for signature.
AB 1548 establishes the California State Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP) under the California Office of Emergency Services to improve the physical security of nonprofit organizations that are at high risk of violent attacks or hate crimes due to ideology, beliefs, or mission. The funds can be used by nonprofit groups for security improvements at their facilities such as community centers, synagogues, mosques, schools, and similar locations. This bill ensures that the funds can be used for security needs such as security guards, establishes the size of the grants and ensures all regions in California are eligible. The bill creates a statute so that the NSGP grant can be funded each year.
Please email or send a letter to the following members to urge them to pass this bill:
- Senator Anthony Portantino, Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee
- Senator Pat Bates, Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee
- Senator Toni Atkins, Senate President pro Tem
- Senator Bob Hertzberg, Senate Majority Leader
- Senator Steven Bradford
- Senator Maria Elena Durazo
- Senator Jerry Hill
- Senator Brian W. Jones
- Senator Bob Wieckowski
Sample Language: "I am writing to urge (name of Legislator) to pass AB 1548 out of the Senate Appropriations Suspense File. The increase in hate-motivated violence and the shocking increase in the number of hate groups has made improving security at religious institutions and institutions serving other at-risk communities, an urgent priority.
This bill will help nonprofit organizations, including but not limited to African Americans, Latinos, Muslims, LGBTQ groups, Sikhs, Asian Americans, immigrants, individuals with disabilities and private nonprofit schools. AB 1548 is critical for providing grant funding for religious and at-risk institutions to strengthen their security and infrastructure. Thank you for your consideration of this request."
